“Forgotten Paths” by Saor is a damn good album. Saor is a band that sounds like no other yet borrow from plenty of elements that folk and black metal bands utilize in their own sound. Saor uses atmospheric black metal, Celtic folk and traditional Scottish instrumentation and writing to forge it’s own sound and remain unique among the sea of atmospheric blackened bands out there. Wildly expressive, emotional and beautiful, Saor has always been one of those bands that stuck out to me with its expansive sounds and catchy riffs and imagery. This is definitely one of those bands you listen to while out on a hike, enjoying the scenery and breathing in the air….enjoying life. Saor would make that experience even greater. Of course, you don’t need to be outside to enjoy Saor’s music, it’s perfectly fitting and fantastic anywhere you are.

Meathook, a brutal death metal band from Arizona, has just released their third album after what appears to be a hiatus or long break in between making new material for fans to enjoy. The new album, “Crypts, Coffins, Corpses” boasts “twisted riffs with the consistency of a fetid swap of gore, drums relentlessly attacking, cracking like a million splintering bones, a bass that dredges the dark places of the earth and a voice that cannot be human”. Which is pretty much something I would have called this album but used different metaphors and nomenclature. Regardless of what words are used, Meathook provides us with the first brutal album of the 2019 year and it’s a ass ripping good time. I’ll explain why after the jump. Continue Reading

The day after Thanksgiving, the holiday we show thanks by being gluttonous swine and eating every single shred of meat and gravy, suckling at the bone and cartilage hoping to obtain maximum satisfaction, we are blessed with another massive serving of bone, gore and blood. This time the host is Cattle Decapitation and the meal is a 23 course engorging on unfamiliar and/or unheard Cattle Decapitation tracks that have been lost or were released elsewhere in the world. This album is a historical trip, as you will hear Cattle evolve through the years with their style of gore, grind and death. This is Medium Rarities, enjoy the meal. Continue Reading
This edition of Quick Reviews is brought to you by big bands with one word for a name: Deicide, Aborted and Behemoth. All of these bands released an album recently and I let you know what I think about them within one or two paragraphs. Enjoy. Continue Reading
Finnish death act Corpsessed let us into their world once again with their sophomore effort titled “Impetus of Death”. This time around, Corpsessed hopes to achieve more when it comes to heavy writing and overall brutality. While taking their time in songwriting, they have achieved a sense of atmosphere and evil without having to go at excessive speeds at all times. This modern death delight should appeal to you fans of early 90’s death metal, Swedish death metal and death-doom genres alike. As simple as it sounds, it is rich with layers and that adds complexity to the mix. Corpsessed keeps it ominous and , yes this is cliche; brutal. Continue Reading
Extreme music is an odd and fickle thing, constantly changing and moving through various trends and phases, constantly picking one subgenre has it’s acceptable choice to get in to the group, before slowly fading them into the background of life when it becomes apparent. You then name drop the band, letting people know that you knew and liked a certain band and a certain type of music before it was cool, making you cool for a time, until ultimately that band falls behind the curve, leaving you to find another band and another subgenre to exploit for selfish gains. I mention this because we are all guilty of it, and at the same time, it is the way we expand as people, learning about new ideas and bands, and help to create cornerstones for what we create ourselves. Finnish Satan spewing blackened death metal cult ARCHGOAT are back with another blasphemous and delicious buffet of growls, riffs and grooves on their new album, The Luciferian Temple! The forth full length from Archgoat, you get exactly what you’d expect from the band if you’ve been a fan of them. If you don’t know what to expect, imagine a quartet of hellish beings ripping away at their instruments and stealing souls in the process. Yeah kinda like that.
Kraanium is a brutal death/slam band from…well all over the world. Members of the band live in Norway, Turkey, Denmark, Finland and the UK. Usually when a band loses it’s front man and vocalist, they don’t continue on or try to with another and it isn’t as good. Kraanium was quiet after the suicide of Martin Funderud (well to me atleast) but they found Jack Christensen (Decay of Existence, Septic Congestion) and rolled out new slams with brutal and foul vocal work laid over it. Slamchosis is a return to form and shows the world that Kraanium is far from done, even after 16 years of brutality and 5 full length albums: prepare for T H I C C slams. Continue Reading
Imperial Triumphant return with their 3rd full length release, a cinematic take on whatever genre this may be but I know it’s something great; Vile Luxury. It’s shockingly horrific, jazzy, exponential, aggressive and oddly intriguing to the point that you have to sit and do nothing else but digest exactly everything that Imperial Triumphant has done here. Blending melodies and terror of black metal and blending it with the unconventional sounds of technical death metal like Ulcerate, Artificial Brain and Gorguts, you get one seriously massive release. The dark jazzy elements added are just the tip of the iceberg. The listening experience of Vile Luxury is a hellish whirlwind of unstable melodies and unorthodox compositions. It’s divine.
