As soon as I walked into The Riot Room, Arsis took the stage. The technical and progressive style they have with their brand of death metal translates well on stage just as is does on my headphones. Arsis was a tight and heavy band throughout their whole set, however bassist Noah Martin stole the show for me as his energy and playing was just captivating. With such a diverse night of metal, they put on a great tech/prog death metal show! Continue Reading

Meathook, a brutal death metal band from Arizona, has just released their third album after what appears to be a hiatus or long break in between making new material for fans to enjoy. The new album, “Crypts, Coffins, Corpses” boasts “twisted riffs with the consistency of a fetid swap of gore, drums relentlessly attacking, cracking like a million splintering bones, a bass that dredges the dark places of the earth and a voice that cannot be human”. Which is pretty much something I would have called this album but used different metaphors and nomenclature. Regardless of what words are used, Meathook provides us with the first brutal album of the 2019 year and it’s a ass ripping good time. I’ll explain why after the jump. Continue Reading
This edition of Quick Reviews is brought to you by big bands with one word for a name: Deicide, Aborted and Behemoth. All of these bands released an album recently and I let you know what I think about them within one or two paragraphs. Enjoy. Continue Reading
Finnish death act Corpsessed let us into their world once again with their sophomore effort titled “Impetus of Death”. This time around, Corpsessed hopes to achieve more when it comes to heavy writing and overall brutality. While taking their time in songwriting, they have achieved a sense of atmosphere and evil without having to go at excessive speeds at all times. This modern death delight should appeal to you fans of early 90’s death metal, Swedish death metal and death-doom genres alike. As simple as it sounds, it is rich with layers and that adds complexity to the mix. Corpsessed keeps it ominous and , yes this is cliche; brutal. Continue Reading
Tampa, Florida is a legendary city for all things American death metal. One of the bands to spawn from that city is Hate Eternal and they have been consistently releasing some damn good death metal ever since 1999. Their style of songwriting is a mix of groove with unorthodox rhythms and technicality at hellish speeds. Rutan’s vocal work has been steady and powerful since I can remember and this combo of events is what makes Hate Eternal a cut above the rest. Continue Reading
This edition of quick reviews is some raunchy, dirty and damn good death metal from Faceless Burial based out of Australia and some nasty thrash from The Crown, based out of Sweden.
This quick review write up is about Spite, a black metal band from America who brings forth nasty Satanic sounds and VoidCeremony, a progressive/blackened death metal band that brings complexity and hectic sounds. Enjoy.
Contrarian is probably one of the more prolific “super group…but not a super group” bands within modern death metal. Several artists hailing from internationally known and loved bands come together to jam some of the coolest progressive death metal songs I’ve ever heard. The bands last album, “Polemic“, was one of my favorite albums to exist in 2015. Their brutal death vocal style by Cody McConnell (Goemagot) over progressive death metal with legendary guitarist Leon Macey (Mithras, Sarpanitum) doing lead guitar stuff just SLAYED. Coming into their new album we have a slightly different sound with To Perceive Is To Suffer, as Macey and McConnell are not on this album. Taking vocal duty is legendary drummer George Kollias (Nile) and he also returns to destroy us on the kit as well. Jim Tasikas’ glorious song writing ambitions return with full energy as well, Brian Mason takes control of the soloing this time around and Ed Paulsen’s delicious bass tones are back with a vengeance. Contrarian may have changed up some things in the lineup department but the enriched song experience is still the same.
Khazaddum’s last EP, “In Dwarven Halls”, was one of 2015’s hidden death metal gems so as soon as I see this new album in my inbox for review I am already highly excited and the bar is unfairly high as far as my expectations go. Their new album continues on with their ‘Dwarven death metal’ assault, as the band further plunges deeper into Tolkien lore in a death metal manner. “Plagues Upon Arda” is wonderfully heavy and a great angle on this story, as it’s usually black metal that tends to tell the tales of Middle Earth. With this album , you are getting your Middle Earth battles in a much more aggressive way and with the addition of symphonic sections, the epic feeling that was on their last release is just so much more impressive. Khazaddum releases another hidden gem, don’t miss out on this release!
It’s been a little over 3 years now since Icelandic death metal titans Beneath have released their last album, The Barren Throne, which was a surprise hit for 2014. They carefully blend brutal death with technicality in their song writing. With their new album, “Ephemeris“, this again hits me well as their brutal technicality is again very present. Tempo changes, vocals filled with hatred, very involved song writing, great production across the board and catchy riffing makes this album very fulfilling.
